Visions of Future | Getting started

Solutions big and small

Kaffeebohnen

WE WILL FACE many major challenges in the future as we seek to better understand the universe, tackle pandemics and eradicate hunger. And DAAD alumnae and alumni around the world are coming up with all kinds of possible solutions. Some ideas start out pretty small – like the drought-resistant coffee plant that Professor Luis Pocasangre Enamorado is breeding in Costa Rica. Sometimes they are complex, such as the research being carried out to facilitate the use of green hydrogen. And at times a scholarship itself can prove life-changing, as was the case for Grier Wilt, who these days prepares astronauts in Texas for NASA lunar missions. The DAAD will be celebrating its one hundredth anniversary in 2025. During the course of its history, it has provided support for nearly three million people, rolled out hundreds of programmes and driven initiatives forward. In this anniversary edition of our Letter, we introduce you to many outstanding alumnae and alumni and present their research and visions. Enjoy discovering! —

Alumni and alumnae often report how life-changing a DAAD scholarship can be – for instance by broadening their horizons in a way that later translates into a more cosmopolitan attitude, professional success or the urge to give something back. Or by giving rise to lasting friendships. Or by providing opportunities for the exchange of expertise, thereby revealing new perspectives, creating innovative networks and contributing to international cooperation.
